This review course is intended for experienced technologists already possessing a basic understanding of EEG concepts preparing for national registry examination. This is NOT a course for beginners. Those seeking basic training in EEG should take the EEG Fundamentals course.

Following the examination content outline published by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) course attendees will review: Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology, EEG Instrumentation/Polarity, Recording Techniques, EEG Pattern Recognition, Clinical Conditions and EEG Correlates, Neonatal & Pediatric EEG.

NEUROANATOMY AND NEUROPHYSIOLOGY Neuroanatomy will include the brain’s structure and function, vascular supply, ventricular system and function of Cranial Nerves and Neurophysiology concepts of membrane, action, and synaptic potentials, neurons and neurotransmitters.

EEG INSTRUMENTATION You will review sensitivity, High, Low and 60 Hz filters (learn to draw and explain frequency response curves) and time constants, differential amplifier, and monitor speed. Other topics of discussion include proper instrument settings, how and when to make adjustments, and the effect of various instrument setting changes on EEG activity. You will more clearly understand and apply the polarity convention and localization techniques and the use of montages to localize EEG activity. Also reviewed will be how to calculate voltage, frequency and duration.

EEG RECORDING TECHNIQUES Included for review are electrode properties, placement (International 10-20 System), and application techniques, and impedance measurements. Also montages, localization and polarity, artifacts, and activation procedures. Further addressed will be concepts related specifically to Digital EEG recording techniques such as recording reference (electrode site, average reference and Laplacian reference), montage reformatting, and networking.

EEG PATTERN RECOGNITION Students will review how to recognize normal, normal variant, and abnormal EEG patterns. Included in normal and normal variants will be Alpha, Posterior Slow Wave of Youth, Beta, Theta, Mu Rhythm, BETS, 14 & 6 Hz Positive Spikes, and many more. Normal sleep transients will also be addressed. Abnormal patterns studied are FIRDA, PLEDS, Triphasic Waves, Burst Suppression, Alpha Coma and more.

CLINICAL CONDITIONS AND EEG CORRELATES This final section will cover an overview of various conditions and their EEG accompaniment. Included here are seizures, cerebrovascular disease, toxic, metabolic, and infectious diseases, brain tumors, head trauma, headaches, and others.

NEONATAL & PEDIATRIC EEG
Review the EEG patterns of children. Included is the progression of the background rhythm with age, Posterior Slow Wave of Youth, Lambda, Hypnagogic Hypersynchrony, Sleep Spindles, Vertex Sharp Waves, POSTS, Hyperventilation Buildup, Gestational & Conceptional Age and how it affects the EEG. Also review Active (REM) and Quiet (Non-REM) Sleep EEG pattern characterists, Trace Alternant, Trace Discontinu, Delta Brushes, and specific seizures related to children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What times are the classes held?

All classes are held from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. except for EEG Board Prep which is held until 12:00 noon.

Are there continuing education credits awarded for these classes and are they accepted by ABRET for recertification?

ASET-The Neurodiagnostic Society has approved Larry Head Institute for ACE (ASET Continuing Education Credits).

ACE credits are recognized by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET), American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AAET), and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM).

Larry Head Institute awards Continuing Education Contact Hours. Course attendees receive a suitable-for-framing Certificate of Attendance. Educational Contact Hours are listed on the certificate. The American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) recognizes Larry Head Institute Education Contact hours for re-certification. It is the responsibility of the attendee to keep track of the Education Contact hours earned through LHI and to submit those to ABRET for re-certification. LHI does NOT track individual Education Contact hours and does NOT submit student continuing education confirmation to ABRET.

Will I receive a certificate for this course?

Larry Head Institute awards a Certificate of Completion for all courses. Certificates of Completion should not be misinterpreted as a registry, license, or validation of competency.

Will I be eligible to take board examinations after I complete the course?

As a past member of ABRET Larry has designed all Larry Head Institute courses to aid the experienced technologist preparing for credentialing examination.

Eligibility requirements for credentialing examinations are outlined on the American Board of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) website for EEG, Evoked Potentials, and Intraopertative Monitoring.

Is a license or registry required to work in this field?

National registry or state licensure is not required to perform EEG, EP, IOM, or NCS. Some employers require technologists to be registered / certified or registry-eligible.

Along with all the national professional organizations representing technologists Larry Head Institute supports and encourages the credentialing process due to its benefits to the patient, employers and the pride of professional achievement afforded the technologist. Therefore, all of our courses are Board Preparation focused.

Can someone with no training or experience take this course?

Comprehensive courses are designed to meet the needs of the practicing technologist and the cross-training allied health professional seeking to improve their knowledge and skills and prepare for national registry examination.

All courses are also aimed at the beginner or inexperienced technologist. Many attend without prior training or experience (some have never worked in the medical field) and complete the course with the knowledge and confidence to perform routine studies.

What payment methods does Larry Head Institute accept?

Larry Head Institute accepts corporate checks, personal checks, money orders and all major credit cards.
